Stamp card

Updated September 30, 2026

In one sentence

A stamp card rewards repeat visits: the customer gets one stamp per purchase and earns a reward when the last box is filled.

A hand holds a cup of latte with leaf art

Why it works

It is the easiest program to understand: no maths, a reward named up front, progress visible at a glance. The closer the card gets to the end, the more the customer wants to finish it; researchers call this the goal-gradient effect.

The settings that matter

Three choices make a card work: the number of boxes, the reward, and the stamps given at the start. A card that is too long gets abandoned; a good customer should be able to fill it in eight weeks or less. The reward should be appealing and clear, like a free coffee or haircut, rather than a percentage off. On a digital card, the stamp is added when the customer’s code is scanned, and the business sees how many cards are in progress.

Example

A café offers a 10-box card, with the eleventh coffee free. A regular who comes every other day fills it in about three weeks.
