Weeks to fill the card
9weeks
The card may run out of steam. Remove boxes or give one more free stamp.
To stay under 8 weeks: 9 stamps at most on the card.
The formula
Weeks = (days between visits × stamps to earn) ÷ 7, where stamps to earn are the card’s stamps minus the free ones.
The assumptions
- The 8-week mark is a practical rule of thumb, not a scientific one: beyond 16 weeks, the card hardly motivates anyone.
- The calculation assumes one stamp per visit. If you give a stamp per spending step, count the visits that earn one.
- In Nunes and Drèze’s car wash study (2006), cards that started with 2 free stamps were completed more often: 34% against 19%.
