Digital loyalty card
Updated September 30, 2026
In one sentence
A digital loyalty card replaces the paper card with a card on the customer’s phone: it counts their visits or points and shows their reward, with nothing to print.

Three possible forms
It comes in three forms. An app to download, either the business’s own or a platform’s. A card added to Apple Wallet or Google Wallet, the wallets already installed on phones. Or a web page the customer bookmarks. The difference is the effort asked of the customer: an app takes time and space, while a card is added to the phone’s wallet in a few seconds.
What changes for the business
The card no longer gets lost at the bottom of a bag or left at home, because the phone goes wherever the customer goes. The business sees how many cards are active, who comes back and who has stopped, and can message members who agreed to it. In exchange, visits need to be confirmed at the counter, usually with a code to scan.
A bakery replaces its 8-box paper cards. The customer scans a sign at the counter and adds the card to their phone; at each purchase, the cashier scans the card’s code and a stamp is added.
